Using the Draw tool

Our Draw tool takes a 2D snapshot of your 3D model and enables you to draw on, add text to, and download a copy of the annotated image to your device.

Whether you want to point out a key anatomical structure, explain what is happening in a physiological process, or jot down a few helpful notes for a student, patient, or peer, the Draw tool is perfect for capturing your thoughts on the fly and referencing them later.

 

Draw tool basics

The Draw tool is available in all 3D models and tours opened in BioDigital's web and mobile apps. It is also enabled by default in all published 3D models but can be disabled in the publishing process.

To use the Draw tool, take the following steps:

    1. Look for the toolbar in the upper-left corner of the 3D scene and click on the pencil icon.

    2. Click and drag to draw on the image, or switch to the text tool to add notes or labels to the image.
    3. Click the Download button in the upper right to download your drawing to your downloads folder. All images are saved in .png format to preserve image quality.

      Note: The Draw tool is responsive, meaning all captured images will match the dimensions of your screen.

    4. Click the X in the upper right to exit and return to the 3D model.

    2. Tap and drag with one finger to draw on the image, or switch to the text tool in the toolbar on the left to add notes or labels to the image.
    3. Tap the Download button in the upper right to download your marked-up image to your device. All images are saved in .png format to preserve image quality.

      Note: The Draw tool is responsive, meaning all captured images will match the dimensions of your screen.

    4. Tap the X in the upper right to exit and return to the 3D model.

Tip: Opening the Draw tool takes a snapshot of your current 3D view. If you are unhappy with the view captured in your snapshot, simply click or tap the X in the upper right to return to the 3D view, reposition and/or customize the model to your liking, and select Draw from the toolbar again.

 

Additional options

Other features within the Draw tool include:

  • Color: Use to change the color of your brush or text. Multiple sizes available.
  • Brush: Use to draw on your image. Multiple sizes available.
  • Text: Use to add plain-text labels to your image. See Add text to your image for detailed instructions.
  • Eraser: Use to remove parts of a drawing (does not work with text). Multiple sizes available.
  • Clear: Use to clear all drawings and text from your image. Cannot be undone.

 

Add text to your image

To add text to your image in the Draw tool, take the following steps:

    1. Select the Text icon in the toolbar on the left side of the image.
    2. (Optional) Select a different font size from the menu, or continue to the next step to keep using the default font size (16px).

    3. Click anywhere on the image to create a new text box, and start typing.
    4. When you are finished, click anywhere outside the text box to save your text.

To edit your text:

    1. Click the text box to reactivate edit mode.
    2. Start typing.

To resize a text box:

    1. Click on any corner of the text box.
    2. Drag your mouse until you are happy with the new size.
    1. Touch any corner of the text box with one finger.
    2. Drag until you are happy with the new size.

To move or reposition a text box:

    1. Click the text box to reactivate it.
    2. Mouse over it until you see a move icon appear.
    3. Click and drag into position.
    1. Tap anywhere on the text box to reactivate it.
    2. Tap the circle at top of the text box and drag into position.

To delete a text box:

    1. Click the text box to reactivate it.
    2. Mouse over it until you see a move icon appear.
    3. Press Delete or Backspace on your keyboard.
    1. Tap anywhere on the text box to reactivate it.
    2. Press Delete or Backspace on your keyboard until all of the text is gone.
