September 2024: Human Viewer enhancements, including diverse skin tones & more prominent chapters

In this release, we are excited to introduce several key improvements to enhance the user experience in the Human Viewer.

First, our gross anatomy models now feature opaque skin layers with adjustable transparency and four different skin tones to choose from, enabling more a realistic and customizable exploration of the anatomy.

We have also redesigned the information panel to streamline navigation:

Together, these improvements aim to foster a more intuitive, inclusive, and efficient learning experience, helping learners focus on the details that matter most.

New skin options for more realistic anatomy exploration

Our gross anatomy models have been enhanced with new skin options, offering a more realistic and approachable anatomy exploration experience to all types of learners.

In Complete Anatomy, Anatomy by Regions, and Anatomy by Systems, you can now choose from four new skin tones—dark, medium, light, and fair—in addition to our classic transparent skin.

You can also adjust the skin's transparency using the new Opacity slider. This feature allows users to explore the underlying anatomy in detail while maintaining the level of skin visibility that feels most comfortable to them. It also provides a clearer understanding of how underlying structures relate to the body's visible exterior.

To explore our new skin options, take the following steps:

  1. Open any Complete Anatomy, Anatomy by Regions, or Anatomy by Systems model.
  2. Select the Layers tool from the toolbar in the upper left.
  3. Under the Integumentary System, select your desired skin tone.
  4. (Optional) Adjust the Opacity slider as needed.

Unified chapter navigation in tours

We have streamlined the information panel on larger screens by merging the "Chapters" and "Info" tabs into a single, cohesive experience. This update allows you to easily follow along with the tour and read the relevant chapter details side-by-side—no more toggling between tabs.

When the Viewer width is 960 pixels or more, the chapter list is now anchored on the left side of the screen, with the chapter descriptions and any additional media (e.g., images, videos, label lists) displayed immediately to the right.

You can continue to navigate through the tour using the Previous and Next arrows, now conveniently positioned above the chapter list, or by clicking directly on the chapter thumbnails.

Streamlined information panel for enhanced readability

We have made two design updates to the information panel to help users prioritize the most important content in each chapter:

  1. Relocated source information: The "Source Information" block has been moved from the bottom of the information panel to the top, directly under the chapter title. This new placement makes it easy to access references for a model or tour without distracting from the main chapter description.

  2. Collapsed legend and labels: When present, the "Legend" and "Labels" sections in the information panel are now collapsed by default. By providing a cleaner and less overwhelming viewing experience, this update allows users to focus on the chapter description first and expand these sections as needed.
