In the BioDigital Human, a model’s position is defined as its location in the 3D space or “canvas” at a given moment.
Every chapter in a model or tour has a default starting position, or the position the model is in when the chapter first loads. In Human Studio, you can change the starting position as needed to make sure the learner sees what you want them to see from the beginning.
If you want to make it easy for the learner to see your model from different perspectives, you can also create and save additional positions.
Change your model’s starting position
If you are customizing a model in Human Studio, you may need to modify its starting position to make sure the most relevant parts of the model are visible to the learner when the chapter first loads.
Warning: If you adjust the position of your model in Studio but do not click “capture” to record your new starting position (see steps 3 and 4 below), your model will revert back to its original starting position. Learn more in Why do I need to "capture" my model's starting position?
To update your model’s starting position, open your model in Human Studio and take the following steps:
-
Select the chapter you want to edit:
- If your model has multiple chapters, all of them will appear in the Chapters panel on the left side of the page. Click on the chapter you want to edit to make it the active chapter.
- If your model only has one chapter, this chapter will already be selected in the Chapters panel.
-
Customize your model and use your mouse, keyboard, or 3D controls to reposition it as desired.
-
When you are happy with the model’s new position, select Positions from the toolbar at the top of the page to open the Positions panel on the right side of the page.
Tip: If you are not planning to add additional positions to your chapter, you can capture your new starting position in one step from the Chapters panel on the left.
- In the Positions panel, click the Capture button below your chapter's thumbnail. Your model’s current position has been saved as your new starting position.
Note: Clicking the Capture button actually updates two aspects of your model:
- Your starting position
- The thumbnail associated with your chapter (i.e, the image displayed next to the chapter title when your model is viewed in the app or published and opened outside the app)
If you need to update only your starting position or only your chapter's thumbnail, click the arrow next to Capture and select Capture Position Only or Capture Thumbnail Only.

About additional positions
In addition to modifying your model’s starting position to match your content, you can also create and save secondary positions in any given chapter. These additional positions, which can be accessed from the information panel in the saved or published model, make it easy for learners to see the content from specific viewing angles and jump between them.
Here are a few sample scenarios in which additional positions would be beneficial:
- A radiologist is preparing a patient for an MRI. To help the patient feel more comfortable leading up to the procedure, the radiologist may want to show the patient our MRI Machine model from two different angles so they can see 1) how the machine will appear from afar and 2) how it will look while they are entering the machine for a scan. (For a radiologist in training, however, it might be more helpful to see the MRI machine from a completely different angle.)
- A trainer at a medical device company is teaching a group of sales representatives about the heart conditions their device is used to treat. During their training, they may want to show our 3D heart anatomy from different angles that correspond with common scans, such as the right anterior oblique (RAO), left anterior oblique (LAO), and posteroanterior (PA) views.
- A physician is preparing a patient for an upcoming procedure that will treat their chronic heart condition. The physician might show a view of our cardiovascular system model to help the patient understand why they might have pain or bruising on their leg after the procedure. Set positions on the leg would enable them to demonstrate how our vascular anatomy connects throughout the body, and how a minimally invasive catheter device will be inserted in their groin up through the vessels for their procedure.
In any of these scenarios, a content creator can create each relevant view by saving it as an additional position in the given chapter.
Create an additional position
To add positions to your model, open it in Human Studio and take the following steps:
- Select the chapter you want to edit:
- If your model has multiple chapters, all of them will appear in the Chapters panel on the left side of the page. Click on the chapter you want to edit to make it the active chapter.
- If your model only has one chapter, this chapter will already be selected in the Chapters panel.
- Customize your model and use your mouse, keyboard, or 3D controls to reposition it as desired.
- When you are happy with the model’s new position, select Positions from the toolbar at the top of the page to open the Positions panel on the right side of the page.
- In the Positions panel, click the Add New Position button under Additional Positions. Your model’s current position has been saved as a new position.
-
(Optional) To change the name of your position, select it from the list, click into the Title field, and enter a new name, such as “Patient View.”
-
(Optional) To change the position itself, select it from the list, use your mouse, keyboard, or 3D controls to reposition the model, and then click the Capture button under the Title field back in the Positions panel.
Copy and paste position coordinates
To apply the coordinates from another position to this one, take the following steps:
Note: At this time it is not possible to share coordinates between a starting position and additional positions.
- Click the three dots next to the first position.
- Select Copy Position from the drop-down menu.
- Click the three dots next to your new position.
- Select Paste Position from the drop-down menu.
Remove a position
To remove a position, click the three dots next to it and select Remove from the drop-down menu.
How to access positions in your published model
How you access positions in your model will depend on whether you added additional positions or not.
-
If you saved additional positions in your model, they will appear in your published model’s information panel under Positions. You may have to scroll down to see it.
To jump to any of your positions, select it from the list. You can also return to your starting position this way.
Alternatively, you can click the Return to Starting Position button in the 3D controls menu in the lower-right corner of the Viewer.
-
If your model contains only a starting position and no additional positions, you can return to the starting position at any time by clicking the Return to Starting Position button in the 3D controls menu in the lower-right corner of the Viewer.
The Positions list will only appear in your published model’s information panel if you added additional positions.
